Battle of Brightlingsea

Demostrators congregate around the wharf gates. A women protestor is injured when she is involved in a collision with a Range Rover driven by the animal exporter Roger Mills. In March 1996 Roger Mills is found guilty of dangerous driving. The women survived to tell the tale. Below a view of the live export ship the Caroline, which had a shallow draft to allow access into the small dock at Brightlingsea.
One of the reasons many thought that live exports would not come through Brightlingsea was because ships could only use the harbour at high tide. Residents thought there was no way a ship big enough to take sufficient sheep, could get into the port area. They were wrong, along came the CAROLINE with a shallow draft, especially built for a job like this.
